There has been a long tradition of mask making in India. They were generally made from paper pulp
or tree fiber. Masks were often used by street performers to change characters instantly. Very often male and female roles were played by men. Masks were a means of conveying these gender changes right before the
audiences eyes.
The masks presented here are heavily influenced by these traditional masks but have been made specifically for decorative purposes. They are made of hydrocal and painted with brilliant oil paint. Needless to say these masks are considerably heavier than the traditional Asian Indian Masks.
